Welcome and Congratulations to our newest Grafton Lions member, Ruqayyah Polk, who was installed at the November 5th Lions Membership Meeting at the Rose-Harms Legion Post.
Ruqayyah had been a guest at a previous meeting and decided to join and share her ideas as a club member. It is always a pleasure to have new people become a part of our Lions Family and bring new ideas to our club.

Grafton LEOs Club Warn Against Texting and Driving In conjunction with the National Red Ribbon Week, which is October 27-November 1st Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, smoking, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States.
Each year, the Grafton LEOs Club warns the busy traffic on Highway 60 to Not Text and Drive and Drive Sober. A severely damaged car and a large sign were needed to convey their message. Thanks to Kirchhayn Auto Salvage from Fredonia who loaned them this vehicle and with towing from Eddie's Service Inc. from Saukville.
This graphic message is a safety alert to all. The Grafton LEOs have 70 plus members. LEO Clubs are a youth organization of Lions Clubs International. The word "LEO" stands for Leadership, Experience, Opportunity. The members are junior and senior high school students grades 6-12. Leo clubs develop leadership qualities by participating in service activities. They are dependent on a Lions Club to sponsor and initiate a LEOs club, but the members initiate their projects and carry them out.

The Grafton Lions Club has formed a partnership with Ozaukee Family Sharing under the direction of District Hunger Chairman and Grafton Lion Phyllis Wiggins.
Lion Phyllis stated that in an attempt to make all our food donations relevant and timely, she asked Ozaukee Family Sharing how we could best help them this year. Ozaukee Family Sharing identified the after-school backpack program as a project needing support. Every week volunteers pack backpacks for Ozaukee County students to take home over the weekend enabling many to have access to nutritious meals until they return to school on Monday. There are 150-160 children who are served with these backpacks.
It was requested by Lion Phyllis that Grafton Lions Club members bring Microwave Mac and Cheese Cups to the October 17th meeting. Grafton Lions members donated 50 containers of Mac and Cheese to the Backpack program which will help combat childhood hunger in our communities. The official count was 588 packs. This is a great way for the Lions to show how we live up to our motto of "We Serve."

The Grafton Lions 26th Annual Golf Outing was held at Edgewater Golf Club. It was a beautiful day with a sold-out event. Golfers had a chance to win a new car if they got a hole in one, prizes on several holes as well as a putting contest were part of the event. The golf events concluded with the Annual Ball Drop where the Grafton Fire Department drops a bucket of golf balls with numbers on them and drops on putting green. The balls were purchased by the golfers and the golfer whose ball goes into the hole splits half the money collected with the Grafton Fire Department. A delicious dinner prepared by Edgewater Golf Club was enjoyed by all at the conclusion of the day

As in years past, the Grafton Lions have hosted an EMT Appreciation Picnic.
The picnic was held on Tuesday, July 16th at Lions Park on Keup Road.
Fire and EMT’s are invited and served a nice picnic dinner and each attendee received a raffle prize donated by the Grafton Lions Club Members. This year with the merger of both the Grafton and Saukville Fire Depatments, both first responders were invited. The camaraderie of both clubs and fire fighters was added to the event.
Many Grafton Lion Club members were there for this fun evening to meet and thank these special people for all they do to keep our community safe. Thank you to all who attended.

Grafton Lions presented three Melvin Jones Fellowship and two Knights of Sight Awards at their June 18th Officer Induction meeting held at the Rose-Harms Legion. Lions Dorothy Reindl and Steve Nauta received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Outgoing President Tim Kohlwey received the Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship. The Knights of Sight were given to Lion Dan Ernst and Lion John Krueger.
The Melvin Jones Award is the highest award given by the charitable arm of Lions Club International. It is recognition of a Lion’s commitment to humanitarian work. The Knight of Sight Fellowship was created by The Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin, to recognize Wisconsin Lions for their overall efforts to restore sight and prevent blindness through their dedicated and generous activities in tissue transportation, and vision screening.

The Grafton Lions honored the memory of former Grafton lions Club President Jack Bublitz with a memorial stone at Lion’s Park located on Keup Road. Bublitz wife Vi, was present for the installation of the stone Last October a 10 foot Sugar Maple was also planted in his honor. Bublitz was Grafton Lions President in 1979-80 as well as a well-known community leader for many years.

Grafton Lions Present Scholarships

On Tuesday, May 21st, the Grafton Lions Club present 4 $1,000 scholarships at their monthly dinner meeting held at Edge Water Golf Club in Grafton. There was 1 Grafton Leo Scholarship and 3 Grafton Lions Scholarships. The scholarships were judged based on school and community activities, volunteerism, helping other students, character, integrity and ethical standards.
The 1 Leo Scholarship was awarded to Trevor Nauta. Trevor was chosen earlier this year as one of the recipients for the Lions Citizenship Award. Trevor plans to attend UW-Madison majoring in Finance and Political Science.
The 3 Lions Scholarship were awarded to the following:
Braden Meyer will be attending Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where he plans to major in Animal Ecology.
Keegen Vaculik plans to attend Marquette University, where he plans to major in Statistical Science and Economics.
Pyper Flaig will be attending Simmons University in Boston, where she plant to major in History and Info Technology. Pyper was also chosen earlier this year as one of the recipients for the Lions Citizenship Award.
Each Spring volunteers get together to plant flower baskets that adorn Washington Street.
The Grafton Lions are always there “to serve” so several Lions and their spouses planted these baskets to be hung up for this summer. It was fun times with the goal of making Grafton more beautiful.

Executive Director of the Grafton Area Chamber of Commerce, Elizabeth Mueller and Grafton Chamber President, Mary Karnitz were the guest speakers at the April 15th Grafton Lions Meeting. Mary has been a life long resident of Ozaukee County and being a part of a family of 11 children, her family was very involved in serving the local community. She has been part of many local volunteer programs and been active in 100 Women Who Care that have given over $300,000 to non-profit organization
In the local communities. She enjoys her role of being part of the Grafton Chamber.
Elizabeth has been part of the Grafton Chamber for the past 2 years and took over as Executive Director when Pam King retired.
Elizabeth gave information on the many upcoming activities in Grafton, the business to business program, their work with the high school and manufacturing facilities to encourage careers in these fields. She invited any Lions member to participate in these activities and should feel free to stop into the newly renovated Chamber Office and learn move of what they all do.

At the Grafton Lions April 2nd Membership Meeting, John Rakowski, Executive Director of Riveredge Nature Center in Saukville was Guest Speaker. John gave an overview, history and informative on the many programs at Riveredge Nature Center. Riveredge has the mission to support conservation through education that awakens curiosity, engages the body, and explores connections to nature for all. Their vision is to form a healthier human and natural communities.
For over 50 years, volunteers and staff have labored to care for this land, to showcase the rich diversity of its habitats. Through outdoor adventures on the land, in the tree tops, and along the river, Riveredge challenges bodies and refresh spirits while developing a deep appreciation for the natural environment. Riveredge has a history of being a leader in research; it mentors students in education, land stewardship and ecological studies and serves as a resource for professional researchers. Time spent in nature each day often results in happiness and well-being. Research shows the physical and mental health benefits of time spent outdoors is beneficial.
Riveredge is always looking for volunteers and support.

At the Grafton Lions March 19 Membership Meeting. Shaina Bucker, Community Sexual Assault Advocate was Guest Speaker. Shaina gave an overview and informative on Advocates and the great things they do to stop domestic Advocates of Ozaukee is an agency that provides services for those who may be experiencing domestic or sexual violence. Shaina earned her Master’s in Social Work from UW-Milwaukee in December of 2019 and has worked with Advocates of Ozaukee for four years as a part time relief and associate.
Congratulations to four Outstanding Grafton High School Seniors who were presented with the Grafton Lions Outstanding Citizenship Awards at its February 6, 2024 membership meeting held at the Rose-Harms Legion in Grafton. Lions Citizenship Award Plaques were presented to Grafton High School Students Trevor Nauta, Pyper Flaig, Juhi Jha, and Brogan Ringgold. These students are involved in many activities such as Grafton Leo’s Club, Best Buddies, Sports, Student Council, Class Offices, Every 15 minutes, Kapco Toy Drive and Church Activities to name a few. The awards are given for advancing the community through the highest standard of character, integrity and community service, The students are nominated from letters of recommendation from Grafton High School Teaching Staff or other students.

The Grafton Lions held their Annual Christmas Party at Bunkers on Tuesday, December 20th. Instead of a holiday raffle, gift exchange, or ornament exchange, the Grafton Lions decided to give to Family Sharing. The club collected the following items: canned fruit (pears, mandarin oranges, pineapples), pancake mix, kidney and black beans, and toothpaste. These are items that are in big demand by Family Sharing Clients. Some members gave a monetary contribution as well. Every contribution of $4 goes to the purchase of a carton of milk and a dozen eggs.
There was a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. From the 50/50 raffle 3 winners were drawn and split 50/25/25. The club's half was donated to Family Sharing. From the Club contributions, 50/50 raffle and silent auction $797 was raised and given to Family Sharing.

One of the projects that Grafton Lions Leo Club took on this holiday season was to collect toys and contributions for Kapco’s Kids2Kids Christmas Toy Drive. The Leo’s Campaign was led by Grafton Leo Club President Trevor Nauta. Trevor was chosen by one of the teachers to represent Grafton High School on the Kapco Enterprise Student Leadership Team. This program is part of the Kapco Enterprise Center and is made up of students from local schools. Trevor was the only student from Grafton on the team.
Trevor came to the Grafton Lions club with a request that the club members bring unwrapped toys to their first December Club meeting. The Club members came through with over 140 toys to add to the many toys given by other residents of Ozaukee County.
Once again the Grafton Lions Club came through and show that they live up to their motto “We Serve”

The Grafton Lions presented a check for $1000 to Julie Hoover, Executive Director of Family Sharing, after a presentation on the various programs as well as their retail store, to the Grafton Lions Membership Meeting on Tuesday, December 5th. Family Sharing is the longest standing Food Pantry in Ozaukee County. Family Sharing’s Food Pantry provides food, at no cost, to Ozaukee County residents in need. The proceeds from their upscale resale store sale go directly to supporting the Food Pantry.

At the recent Breakfast with Santa, sponsored by the Grafton Chamber of Commerce, 3 generations of the Nauta family helped set-up, make coffee and make sure there were enough pancakes, sausage, tables were cleaned and enough Grafton Leos were there to serve to the 500 plus guests.
Dale Nauta has been a member of the Grafton Lions for several years. Son Steve, is the Grafton Lion Leo’s Liaison and District Leo Advisor. Each year on the day of the Grafton Christmas Parade, the Grafton Chamber of Commerce has a Breakfast with Santa at Circle “B” Recreation on Highway 60 in Cedarburg. This year over 500 kids, parents and grandparents were served a Pancake Breakfast. Children could sit on Santa’s lap, see their favorite character and enjoy a nice breakfast.
This year as in years past, the Grafton Lions Leo helped to serve the food, dress in various costume characters as well as being part of the Holiday Parade after the breakfast.
Several Grafton Lions also are in attendance to make sure the Leos have enough items such as juices, sausages, pancakes in serving trays, milk, fresh fruit and help in any way needed. These Leo’s and Lions sure help to let the community know that we live up to our motto that “We Serve”. Thanks you to all who gave of their time for this fun event.

Vi Bublitz donates a beautiful Sugar Maple
On Monday, October 30th, Vi Bublitz, Dave Mauer, Lions Park Chr. and Chad Hoier, Village Director of Parks and Recreation looked on while the Grafton Public Works crew planted the ten-foot, 2.5 inch caliber Sugar Maple tree. The tree was donated by Vi Bublitz in memory of her husband, Jack. Jack Bublitz was well known in the Grafton Community over the years. He was a Senior Officer at the Grafton State Bank and active in many community events. He was also a member of the Grafton Lions Club for many years serving the Club in most positions including President, 1979-80. Later this year, a stone with an engraved plaque will be set next to the tree.

Grafton Lions presented two awards, the Melvin Jones Fellowship and Birch-Sturm Award at their September 5th club meeting. The recipients were Darrel Blank and Rose Sauers.
Melvin Jones Fellowship – The Melvin Jones Fellowship was presented to Rose Sauers. Rose is past president of the Grafton Lions Club and is Zone Chairman for 2023-24. The Melvin Jones Award is the highest award given by the charitable arm of Lions Club International. It is recognition of a Lion’s commitment to humanitarian work. The recipient is selected by the club’s Melvin Jones Committee. The club makes a contribution of $1,000 in this person’s honor or memory to the Lions Club International Foundation. LCIF mission is to support the efforts of Lions clubs and partners in serving communities locally and globally, giving hope and impacting lives through humanitarian service projects and grants.
Birch-Sturm Award – The Birch-Sturm Award was presented to Darrel Blank. Darrel has been an active member of the Grafton Lions for many years. He is current membership chairman and Past President of the Wisconsin Lions Foundation. The Birch-Sturm is the highest award given by the charitable arm of the Wisconsin Lions Foundation. The recipient is selected by the club’s Birch-Sturm committee. The Wisconsin Lions Foundation established this special commendation for those who demonstrated excellence in their service to others. The Lions Club makes a contribution of $1,000 in this person’s honor to the Wisconsin Lions Foundation, earmarking the donation to the Birch-Sturm fund. The Fellowship is named in honor of the only two Presidents of Lions International from Wisconsin, Frank Birch and Clarence Sturm.

Grafton Lions Present Scholarships
On Tuesday, May 16th, the Grafton Lions Club present 4 $1,000 scholarships at their monthly dinner meeting at Rose-Harms Legion in Grafton. There was 1 Grafton Leo Scholarship and 3 Grafton Lions Scholarships. The scholarships were judged based on school and community activities, volunteerism, helping other students, character, integrity and ethical standards.
The 1 Leo Scholarship was awarded to Jordan Guerra. Jordan was chosen earlier this year as one of the recipients for the Lions Citizenship Award. Jordan plans to attend Northeast Wisconsin Technical College majoring in Digital Media Technologies and Digital Marketing
The 3 Lions Scholarship were awarded to the following:
Lili Hansen will be attending the University of Wisconsin – Madison where she plans to major in Biomedical Engineering and go on to get a master’s degree to become a Physician Assistant.
Linnea Wheeler will be attending the University of Pittsburgh where she plans to major in Linguistics and ultimately get a PhD in Linguistics and then do research in language acquisition
Grace Viessellmann, at the time of the scholarship was deciding between University of Wisconsin- Madison or Eau Claire, where she plans to have a major in Biology/Pre-Pharmacy. Her career goal is to work in medicine. She wants to become a pharmacist with an emphasis on research and drug development

The Grafton Lions Club recognized four outstanding Grafton High School Students at its February 21, 2023 membership meeting that was held at the Edgewater Golf Club in Grafton. Lions Citizenship Award Plaques were presented to Grafton High School Seniors Bella Boiland, Jordan Guerra, James Rhines, and Amanda Hoenecke. These students are involved in many activities such as Grafton Leo’s Club, Best Buddies, Sports, Student Council, Work Camp, Kapco Toy Drive and Church Choir to name a few. The awards are given for advancing the community through the highest standard of character, integrity and community service, The students are nominated from letters of recommendation from Grafton High School Teaching staff or other students.

At the February 7th Grafton Lions Membership Meeting, 3 Grafton Leo’s presented a program on the many things they do in the community. Each year they put up a sign with a wrecked car warning of not drinking, driving and texting, costume characters in the Christmas Parade, sell nuts at the Lions Nut Sale, serve pancakes at the annual Breakfast With Santa before the Holiday Parade as well as volunteering to be Bell Ringers at the Salvation Army Red Kettles. These are just a few of the many activities this group of young men and women, who are the future, contribute to our community.

Christmas Pancake Breakfast (before the Grafton Christmas parade) The Grafton Leo’s Club were an integral part of making the 2022 Breakfast with Santa a big success. The Leo’s helped serve a breakfast of pancakes, sausages, apple sauce and beverage. Some of the Leo’s also wore costume characters in the 42nd Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, November 26th. It’s always nice to see the younger generation volunteering to make an event a success. Thank you for all you do!
Each year for over 25 years the Grafton Lions set up the Nativity Scene at a local business in Downtown Grafton. The set-up occurs the week before the Annual Holiday Events take place. Each year one of the events at the Grafton Lions Golf outing is the Annual Golf Ball Drop.
Golfers have the opportunity to win half of the money raised by buying golf balls that are numbered.
A Grafton Fire Department firefighter climbs a ladder truck and drops the balls on the putting green.
Who ever gets closest to the cup wins half of the pot and the Grafton Fire Association gets the other half.
Lion Dave Antoine and Grafton Lions President Rose Sauers presents a check for $206 to Firefighter Luke Van Natta, who climbed the ladder and dropped the balls. It is a fun event and a great community builder.
Each year the Grafton Lions have an Appreciation Picnic at Veteran’s Park.
All police, fire and EMT’s are invited and are served a nice picnic lunch and each person attending receive a raffle prize donated by the
Club members. The event was held on July 19th and a good turn out was achieved. It is the least our community can do to thank these wonderful people for keeping our citizens safe.
Grafton Lions Present Awards
Grafton Lions presented two awards at their recent board of directors’ induction ceremony. The recipients were Mike Hennig and John Krueger.
Melvin Jones Fellowship – The Melvin Jones Fellowship was presented to Mike Hennig. Mike is currently the Grafton Lions Club Secretary and in charge of Food Donations. The Melvin Jones Award is the highest award given by the charitable arm of Lions Club International. It is recognition of a Lion’s commitment to humanitarian work. The recipient is selected by the club’s Melvin Jones Committee. The club makes a contribution of $1,000 in this person’s honor or memory to the Lions Club International Foundation. LCIF mission is to support the efforts of Lions clubs and partners in serving communities locally and globally, giving hope and impacting lives through humanitarian service projects and grants.
Birch-Sturm Award – The Birch-Sturm Award was presented to John Krueger. John has been an active member of the Grafton Lions for many years and a past president. He is currently the club treasurer, in charge of the Grafton Flower Bed, and on the Golf Committee. The Birch-Sturm is the highest award given by the charitable arm of the Wisconsin Lions Foundation. The recipient is selected by the club’s Birch-Sturm committee. The club makes a contribution of $1,000 in this person’s honor to the Wisconsin Lions Foundation, earmarking the donation to the Birch-Sturm fund.
The Salvation Army of WI and upper MI in appreciation gave the Grafton Lions this award in recognition
for dedicated service to the Salvation Army and Ozaukee County. I would like to thank all the Leo’s and Grafton Lions who
took their time to ring the Red Bells for the 5 weekends before Christmas at Grafton’s Pick N Save.
We gave 100 hours of service to this very worthwhile organization.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship was created in 1973, takes its name from the founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones. It is an honor–not an award. The Melvin Jones Fellowship was established as Lions Clubs International Foundation’s (LCIF) highest form of recognition to acknowledge an individual’s dedication to humanitarian service.
Mr. Triantafillou has served the Grafton Lions Club for many years with dinners, banquets and summer picnics. He has been a supporter of many of the Grafton Lions fund raiser with prizes, hole sponsorship and special meals for different events. He truly is dedicated to service with the Lions.
