GRAFTON LIONS CONTINUE TO BEAUTIFY GRAFTON LIONS PARK
Twenty five years ago, the present Grafton Lions 16 acre Park was farmland along Cedar Creek. Today, this gem of the Village of Grafton Park System is a busy destination for families, children, reunions and weddings.
.
The park is located on Keup Road, just south of Highway 60. Look for a large bright yellow Lion at the entrance to Grafton Lions Park. This new park is among 18 parks in this Village of 12,000 residents.
In 2004, the Grafton Lions Club was presented with an opportunity of a lifetime. The Village of Grafton was looking to sell park naming rights for a new park along Cedar Creek. Naming rights were $ 75,000, a figure that scared some members of the Lions Club. But Ultimately, The club members came on board and pledged the required amount in 2005.
The following year, the club took on an additional commitment in the form of $ 50,000 for playground equipment. The $125,000 came through contributions from individual and corporations. No funds were used from yearly fund raising activities meant to help non-profit organizations. This park project was headed up by Lion Dave Mauer, who is currently the Grafton Lions Park Chairman.
The next project was to build the beautiful park pavilion. Funding was made available through the Village of Grafton. The Grafton Lions Club, along with 37 talented members, built the structure. The Project took 718 volunteer hours to construct. The formal Grand Opening of the park was on Saturday, May 5, 2012.
The next project for the Grafton Lions was to plant large trees and flower beds. To date, thirty (30) beautiful Maple Trees have been planted. The club has a long way to go. 16 acres is a lot of land to cover.
The Village of Grafton declared Friday, April 27TH as Arbor Day. In conjunction with this special day, the Grafton Lions Club planted four (4) beautiful Sugar Maples (1.5 caliper) in the park. The money was again donated by individuals and corporations.
The Grafton Lions Club would like to thank, John Safstrom, Parks and Recreation Director and Jake Arndt, Superintendent of Public Works for their guidance and help in planting these trees.
If you haven’t seen Lions Park, take an hour and tour this gem of the Village of Grafton park system. You will love it. Come see them grow.
